At around 15:15 on 29 August 2026, a passenger train struck a delivery van at Martin Lane user worked level crossing, which is located between Bescar Lane and New Lane stations in Lancashire. The driver of the van was fatally injured in the accident. Two passengers onboard the train sustained minor injuries and significant damage was caused to the delivery van, the train, and to lineside infrastructure.
Martin Lane user worked level crossing has gates on either side of the railway which are manually operated by road users. The crossing is provided with signage which instructs users how to use it and is also fitted with a miniature stop light system. This shows a green light to users when it is considered safe for them to cross the railway. As trains approach the crossing, this changes to a red light, and an audible alarm sounds. The crossing is also fitted with telephones to allow users crossing with large or slow vehicles, or animals, to contact the signaller.
Our investigation will determine the sequence of events that led to the accident and will include consideration of:
- the actions of those involved and any factors that may have influenced them
- any previous incidents at this crossing, and how these may be relevant to this accident
- the management of risk at this crossing and Network Rail’s wider strategy for assessing and mitigating risks at user worked crossings
- any relevant underlying factors.
