Good Energy: The Surprising Connection Between Metabolism and Limitless Health

What if depression, anxiety, infertility, insomnia, heart disease, erectile dysfunction, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, dementia, cancer and many other health conditions that torture and shorten our lives actually have the same root cause?

Our ability to prevent and reverse these conditions - and feel incredible today - is under our control and simpler than we think. The key is our metabolic function - the most important and least understood factor in our overall health.

As Dr. Casey Means explains in this groundbreaking book, nearly every health problem we face can be explained by how well the cells in our body create and use energy.

To live free from frustrating symptoms and life-threatening disease, we need our cells to be optimally powered so that they can create “good energy,” the essential fuel that impacts every aspect of our physical and mental wellbeing.

In January 2021, my mom abruptly died of pancreatic cancer.

Her oncologists told her the cancer was “unlucky,” but this was not true. Cancer, and nearly every chronic condition that plagues and shortens our lives, is a preventable illness highly tied to metabolic health. In the decades leading up to my mom’s cancer diagnosis, she was informed her rising cholesterol, waistline, fasting glucose, and blood pressure levels were conditions that she could “manage” for life with a pill. They should have been seen as warning signs.

Shortly after our mom’s death, my sister and I decided to write a book with information we wish my mom had earlier – including:

The book uses Casey’s story and expertise to make these points, and I am honored to have helped her write it.

We worked with an incredible team to produce the book. Our agent, Richard Pine, has helped create agenda-setting books by Mark Hyman, Adam Grant, Tim Urban, Angela Duckworth, and Sal Kan. Our publisher, Penguin Avery, has spearheaded books by authors such as James Clear (Atomic Habits), the Dali Lama, and Brené Brown.

We need to move from a health paradigm where we see each disease in a silo to a metabolic view where we understand almost every disease is connected. The majority of Americans are experiencing brewing metabolic dysfunction and I hope this book helps improve lives in the short-term and reduces unnecessary deaths (like my mom’s) in the long-term.
