The LPG tanker Disha, carrying 28 Indian crew members, was recently targeted near the Strait of Hormuz, within Iranian waters. Thankfully, all crew members are safe, and the Indian Embassy in Tehran is actively monitoring the developing situation. In light of escalating tensions in West Asia, India has wisely advised against deploying new crew members to this high-risk region.
The International Maritime Organization reports that since March, a staggering 61 commercial ships have faced attacks in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman, leading to at least 17 seafarer fatalities and numerous injuries.
Additionally, on July 18, 2026, the commercial vessel MV OMORFI was attacked while navigating through the Black Sea, allegedly within Russian territorial waters. At that time, the ship had ten crew members on board, including three Indian nationals. Such incidents underline the urgent need for heightened vigilance and precaution in maritime operations in these perilous waters.
Tragically, one Indian national has lost his life in the recent attack, while the other two Indian nationals on board are reported safe. The Indian Mission in Russia is actively coordinating with local authorities to ensure that the affected family receives all necessary support during this difficult time. India firmly condemns such attacks on commercial shipping, which pose a grave risk to the lives of innocent civilian crew members.
It is alarming that the freedom of navigation and international commerce face growing threats. We urge all involved parties to fulfill their international responsibilities and work diligently to protect maritime safety and ensure an uninterrupted flow of global trade.
