The Secretary of State for Justice has announced the reappointment of Martin Jones as His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Probation. Martin Jones’ reappointment will be for a second term of 3 years from 1 March 2027 to 30 April 2030.
HM Inspectorate of Probation is the independent inspector of probation and youth justice services in England and Wales. Its purpose is to report on the effectiveness of work with adults and children and young people who have offended, through independent inspections, recommendations, research and effective practice guidance.
The appointment of His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Probation is regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments and complies with the Governance Code on Public Appointments.
Biography
Martin Jones CBE has served as His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Probation since March 2024, leading the independent inspectorate responsible for scrutinising probation and youth justice services across England and Wales. Since taking up the role, he has overseen a programme of inspections focused on public protection, victim safety and service improvement, and has led the publication of the Inspectorate’s Annual Report on Probation Services. He also became Chair of the Criminal Justice Joint Inspectorates Chief Inspector Group in 2025. Prior to joining the Inspectorate, Martin was Chief Executive of the Parole Board for nine years and was awarded a CBE in 2021 for services to victims, transparency and diversity in the parole system. He brings more than 30 years of leadership experience across the justice sector.
